Experienced Senior Secondary School Math tutor and Winner of 2013 Edition of Cowbell NASSMAC

In 2014, I was an associate tutor at Iganmode Grammar School, where I taught Mathematics and coordinated the day-to-day tutoring, using step-by-step systems. I was also responsible for assessing the weekly performances of this team ( of 6 students), from which one of them emerged as the first runner up of Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition – Senior category (2014 edition) at the state level. In addition to this, all of these students had distinction in Mathematics in their SSCE and great math scores in UTME.

Mathematics, as we know it, can be a very boring subject to teach (as a tutor) or learn (as a student), right? Well, one of the things I realized was that if I didn't try to relate with the student(s) or create or have any interesting story to share about the topic, I'd seem a boring teacher and they'd stop paying attention. So, I learned that building a strong student-tutor relationship and being able to effectively communicate what I teach doesn't just make me a better tutor but also a better person.

About

TEACHING MATHEMATICS IS a skill that I have cultivated through: spending hours, daily, solving different math problems from a range of topics, taking part, and winning in countless mathematics challenges and competitions like the Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition, and Preparing over 10 students to win the aforementioned mathematics competition and pass mathematics in national exams.

Math and/or further math are the easiest subjects to pass in any examination. Why? Because it’s simple and straight forward and algorithmic. If you can have a deep understanding of the facts and figures of mathematics, like I have, then I bet you will see the beauty behind all the crazy and chaos—the symbols, formulas, and unknowns (that seem unknowable). To pass math in any exam all you need is: (a) develop an interest in the subject (b) make time for the subject (your newly found interest), and (c) find a helping hand to give you a little nudge and guide you through (could be a tutor or a comprehensive text or both). Let me walk you through the madness that is math!
