JAMB English Language Tutor helping candidates acquire the right tools to pass successfully

The JAMB Use of English syllabus expects that candidates are able to read and comprehend comprehension passages (deduce meanings, identify topic sentences and grammatical functions), determine similar and opposite meanings of words and understand the basics of oral English.

In my experience of tutoring JAMB English language candidates, I observed that students majorly flopped in understanding comprehension passages, deducing implied meanings and telling what idiomatic expressions meant. It is not enough to identify the problem areas but to equally help them succeed during the examination.

I ensure that students practice how to understand and attempt comprehension passages correctly. They need not be familiar with the subject matter since passages are likely to be adaptations from unknown authors/books but are employed to use logical thinking. To save time, I encourage students to read the questions first before reading the passage. By so doing, they are able to quickly relate the passage to the questions originally read. Also, underlining useful words, phrases and sentences help to relate to the answers faster.

Finally, the examiners know that candidates do not pay special attention to the Test of Orals. Therefore, they tactically include more vowel sounds. Vowel sounds are to be learnt by heart as students may experience difficulty in identifying them. As my favorite part of English language, I encourage students not to look down on the marks awarded to this section but to equally see it as bonus points to them by helping them practice everyday.

As a class teacher, I was responsible for the academic wellbeing of the pupils. I ensured that lesson notes were properly written, studied before coming to class to teach. My method of teaching was to introduce the topic to the pupils by asking them questions about previous knowledge. Each pupil is given the opportunity to answer questions either my demonstration or mere words. Anothet method of introducing the new topic was to bring instructional materials to class which I found out exposed their minds to what exactly the topic was about. Pupils are expected to ask questions and are either giving classworks or take home assignments.
