Phonics is a branch of linguistics where the sounds and physical properties of the human speech sounds are studied. Phonics reading is highly essential in every child's education.
I believe teaching children phonics will help them in many ways.
In the first instance, phonics reading is very important in helping children to learn how to spell words. It will be impossible for a person to spell any word correctly if the person is not able to recognize the sounds of the letters used in forming the words. When a child is taught phonics, the child will be able to recognize sounds in words and will be able to spell them correctly.
In my years of experience as a teacher, I have realized that children have problems in reading because they are not able to recognize the sounds of the letters of the alphabets in the words they read. Phonics reading will help children to recognize and associate sounds of the letters of the alphabet in the word they read. This will help them to improve in their reading skills and efficiency. In other words, it will be difficult for a child to improve in his reading skills if the teaching of phonics is removed from their curriculum.
Phonics reading helps also to increase a child's fluency in reading. Fluency in this context is not limited to reading fast. It also means reading a text accurately. When a child is taught phonics properly, the child will find reading easy. The child will not only read accurately but also quickly.
Phonics reading is also necessary for the improvement of a child's reading comprehension. It is impossible for somebody to understand a word that is not properly pronounced. When a child learns how to pronounce a word very well, the child will be able to comprehend what he or she reads.
Phonics reading will also help a child in acquiring more vocabulary on daily basis. When a child is able to pronounce a word correctly, the child will be able to understand the word. Children normally use the words that they understand in their daily speech.
Children have to develop more confidence in themselves before they begin to vocalize more. This begins the moment they realize that they can pronounce words correctly like older people. It is only through phonics reading that children will develop the ability to pronounce words very well. So, if you want your child to develop confidence and become more vocal in the future, you need to teach him or her phonics.
My name is Jolomi, I am a graduate of History and International Studies from the prestigious University of Benin.
My five years of experience in teaching English Language and it's components as well as Government, has shaped my approach to tutoring, which focuses on building the confidence of my students, particularly surrounding examination preparation and techniques.
I favor the one on one teaching method. For me, it provides a more disciplined and focused environment for my students to learn in.
My initial approach is to develop a solid relationship with my students in order to discover their learning techniques, interests, strengths and weaknesses and provide them with specific support and guidance.
I also believe it is vital that my students gain a comprehensive understanding of how to decipher examinations and the way they are marked, it is equally important for my students to feel confident, calm and capable when under examination conditions.
The benefit of private tutoring is it allows me to provide tailor made lessons and strategies to my students that can directly address any areas of lower confidence and bolster areas of strength and capability.
Whether it's in English Language or Government, my aim is always to foster my students's independent and creative thinking and hopefully instill a real interest in the subjects.
Yes - the individual goal (such as passing an exam) is important, but I will like my students to grow and develop skills which will help them in years to come.

One-on-one lessons offers me the ability to gear every moment to suit each student’s unique outlook, thus generally achieving quicker results. I believe the key is to first get an understanding of my student’s motivation, learning technique and interests, then plan and tailor classes carefully and accordingly. Situations and attitudes often change, however, so as a tutor it is also essential to be alert, empathetic and flexible to ensure we achieve the best results at the end of sessions. I would also carry out periodic assessments on my students to help ascertain the extent to which the sessions have impacted him/her. The results from these periodic assessments will also determine the lesson plan/structure to an extent.
