James O.
Basic Science and Technology Tutor
Efficient Science Tutor
In contrast to many Science Tutors, I understand what it's like to struggle with or be disinterested in the subject. I can't promise that you'll fall in love with the subject the way I did, but most of my students come away with a sense that they've learned something valuable and with a deeper understanding than they would have attained on their own. Regardless, building strength in science will develop a host of transferable skills that will prove useful well into the future.
About
My name is James, I am a graduate of Computer Science Education from Ekiti State University. I have more than 6 years experience teaching Mathematics, Science and ICT to Students, Preparing them for internal and external examinations. My passion is to see my students improve and achieve more through learning and mentoring.
I think students perform the best when they are the most engaged in what they are learning, when they can connect their learning to things they already love, whether that’s activities, interests or hobbies. The most important aspect of private tuition, in my view, is that I develop a relationship with my students which goes beyond the teacher-pupil arrangement, so they can grow in confidence with the knowledge that they have a mentor to support them both academically and in personal development.
My approach varies hugely depending on the student I am tutoring. However I think something which unifies it across the range of ages and abilities is that I always try to break down what seem like huge, difficult subjects or assignments into smaller, manageable, non-scary, fun tasks. I work closely with each student to determine the ways in which they learn best, their interests, strengths and weaknesses, and feed this back into my tutoring methods, creating a tailor-made learning experience. My methods are, of course, also informed by a thorough understanding of assessment requirements and criteria both for school entrance examinations and public examinations. I believe that a positive and confident attitude towards the academic subject being studied can be hugely beneficial in terms of results, and I try to engender this by providing a supportive yet challenging relationship and environment for study. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring each of the subjects I teach, and hope that I can transmit my enthusiasm and energy to my students.

My approach to tutoring is student-driven and question-based. 'Student-driven' means that each lesson is tailored to their own needs and concerns. We tackle the topics that they find most challenging and build confidence from there. 'Question-based' means that I always keep my students engaged and on their toes. They are an active participant in the lesson and enjoy rising to the challenge. As we tackle more material, I make sure that we regularly revisit what we've learnt in previous weeks. Recapping our progress at the beginning of each lesson means that new-found knowledge sticks in my student's long-term memory. They'll be well-prepared when exam time comes around!
