Tafa A.

My name is Tafa, I am a graduate of Chemistry Education from the University of Lagos. I have three years of teaching experience teaching Secondary School Students Mathematics and Chemistry, preparing them successfully for internal and external examinations like WAEC, NECO and IGCSE.

One of the most important elements in successful learning is full engagement with a subject, and I always take time to get to know what a student enjoys and responds to and what they find interesting about it.

I know from experience that when you enjoy something and feel interested in it, the work you put in is both less arduous and more satisfying, and you are far more likely to excel.

I listen carefully to students - I encourage them to do a lot of the talking - and I am good at gauging how they learn and absorb new information. I tailor my sessions to fit them and their learning styles, as this is the surest way that they will learn and make progress. For example, where some students will be very verbal, others will think more visually, and want to map things on the page.

My unofficial motto: whatever works for the individual. I always keep any texts being studied close at hand, so that all discussions and exercises relate directly to them and the student is always relating general learning to their specific set texts, thereby gaining an intimate knowledge of them.

I have often found that a lack of confidence is what holds students back, and have supported and encouraged my students in trusting their own ideas and interpretations, enjoying what they are studying, and having high expectations of themselves.
