About

My name is Kuforiji, I am a graduate of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Ilorin. I have three (3) years of teaching experience teaching Mathematics, Physics and Further Mathematics to Secondary School Students.

I am conversant with the Nigerian and British Curriculum. I have successfully prepared students for IGCSE and JAMB.

I feel it is important for mathematics and science that students develop a basic understanding of core concepts so that when they move on to more challenging material they can start to work out answers for themselves using first principles. In order to help students develop this understanding I tend to ask lots of questions and help students to reach the answers on their own. In my experience this approach helps increase retention of information and encourages students to share their thought process aloud.

For me, the most important part of tutoring is building confidence, wherever the student is starting from. I like to get a good understanding of a student's strengths, and where there is room for improvement, encouraging the strengths whilst addressing the aspects that need working on. Sometimes that can be about going over a topic afresh, or other times just practicing a skill, such as solving an equation.

Where students are preparing for exams, I include some exam questions, to maintain technique. Lastly, I like to find out what a student finds stimulating about a subject, and give some time to nurturing that interest, as enjoyment makes hard work easier.

I believe it is important to know the individual in order to be an effective teacher. I therefore spend time getting to know my students before teaching begins - finding out their interests, hobbies, strengths and weaknesses. We will then chose achievable goals together - this is very important as it is vital the student has a sense of ownership for their learning. After that, it is all about making the lessons as relaxed, interactive and informative as possible. By being approachable and encouraging I like to create a safe space where students can make mistakes to aid their learning. When preparing pupils for GCSE , I focus on key content and revision techniques with plenty of exam practice. I always strive to make my lessons as fun as possible.
