I believe that the most important virtue in a tutor is the ability to empathise with a student's cognitive position. When teaching I aim to guide a student through the mental steps needed to accomplish the goal of the lesson.
I typically spend much of a lesson in dialogue with the student. I break this up with exercises to embed and reinforce key points, but I always end the lesson with a call to reflection on what the student has learned. I emphasise that knowledge is open-ended and interconnected.

My name is Walter. I am a graduate of Computer Science from the National Open University.
My four years experience teaching Mathematics and Computer Science has helped me tailor my approach to tutoring, and my methods vary according to my students.
The value of one-to-one tutoring is it’s capacity to cater precisely to the needs and learning style of my students, and i like to take some time when we begin, to ascertain exactly what teaching methods will be best suited.
Whatever the circumstances, i take a holistic approach to my role as a tutor and aim to help my students not only learn the curriculum or prepare for an entrance examination but also to become confident, independent, able to organize their work, put together revision timetables and develop methods to aid understanding and retention.
I encourage my students to be goal-oriented and maintain enthusiasm and motivation by establishing clear attainable milestones, which strike a balance between challenging them and also developing confidence.
Most importantly, however, i think it is essential that my students enjoy their sessions and that the subject matter is made relevant and relatable.

I believe one-to-one tutoring to be an incredibly important aspect of education. Tutoring offers a great environment where my students can learn and grow confidence, allowing my students to quickly gain a strong development in the specific subject area. For each of my student, i design the tutorials to best develop their specific learning and concentration ability, with a view towards gaining context and understanding of the subject in preparation for examinations.
