Onuminya J.
Physics Tutor
About
My name is Onuminya, I am a second class upper division degree graduate of Biochemistry from the University of Jos. I also have a master's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Lagos. I am an experienced teacher having taught Physics, Biology and Chemistry for over five years. In these years, i have significantly increased the success rate of my students.
I care a lot about my students understanding the concepts they are learning, not just getting the right answers, and will spend as long as it takes to help them get there.
Being a visual person myself, I am quick to use diagrams and visual aids to help students process things in a different way. Whenever I edit students' writing I make sure to explain why I've corrected or changed things, even down to the punctuation edits. I am happy to work with weaker students, as I am a very patient tutor.
I believe students perform best when they feel as confident as possible. This inspires my teaching style, which is kind and respectful but rigorous and thorough. I strive to build a trusting and respectful relationship between me and my students, as this is conducive to an enthusiastic and successful learning atmosphere. My excellent academic record from the University through to my MSc degree means I am well-suited to teach these disciplines. I greatly enjoy teaching science, as I find that the analytical and argumentative skills it fosters form the fundamental backbone to learning all disciplines.

My strategy in tutoring is to make a subject interesting and important for my students. Igniting the interest to a subject is the first and crucial step in academic success. Breaking the complex concept into easy logical blocks, finding funny analogies and important connections with real life help my students achieve deep understanding of a subject. Telling my students a discovery story and letting them to "re-discover" the key concept is another powerful tool.
